RNZSPCA stands for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Its mission is to advance the welfare of all animals in New Zealand.
Through its district branches it provides help to animals and owners 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As a charity, it receives only 2% of its funding from the New Zealand government. As a result, it relies almost entirely on the generosity of the public to carry out their life-saving work. The majority of its income comes from donations, bequests and its own fundraising efforts.
The SPCA Blue Tick guarantees high welfare standards for animal food products such as eggs and pork. This humane certification programme provides consumers with certainty when purchasing food products in New Zealand.
By purchasing products that carry the SPCA Blue Tick you are supporting animal welfare and helping to promote better farming practices in New Zealand.
Be sure to only purchase SPCA Blue Tick approved eggs - look for the SPCA Blue Tick Tick. Or sign up at http://rnzspca.org.nz/ and become a member of the SPCA.
For many years, the SPCA has been calling for a total ban on battery cages.
The Draft Code for Animal Welfare - Layer Hens, released this year by the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC), has favoured the transition from conventional cages to colony systems.
RNZSPCA: "We find this Draft Code absolutely unacceptable, as it moves to ban battery cages but proposes yet another cage option which is little better. These proposed cages are known as ‘enriched’ cages or colony systems, and gives the birds little more room."
